Hokkaido University is one of Japan’s oldest,
largest, and most prestigious national universities, founded in 1876
as Sapporo Agricultural College . As a leading comprehensive
research institution, it is renowned for its pioneering "Frontier
Spirit," a philosophy rooted in the words of its first Vice
President, Dr. William S. Clark, who famously urged students to "Be
ambitious" .
The university is consistently recognized as a global leader,
particularly for its commitment to sustainability, ranking first in
Japan in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for four
consecutive years (2020-2024) for its contributions to the UN
Sustainable Development Goals . It has also produced two Nobel
laureates in Chemistry, Akira Suzuki (2010) and Benjamin List
(2021), who is a specially appointed professor at the university
